1. What’s Your Objective?

Illuminate: The most basic objective is to illuminate, whether that be performers, sets or props.
Highlight: Directing an audience’s attention to a particular area using visual cues.
Create an atmosphere: Lighting combined with other special effects such as fog, haze or flame.

2. Positioning

Front light: Front lights are the primary source of lighting for a performance. It is generally a ‘wash’ pointing towards performers’ faces, but by themselves, they will make a performer appear flat.
Backlighting: Provides a dimensional appearance, dramatic contrast between the subject and background, and emphasizes depth.
Downlighting: Downlighting is another way to add dimension but is also often used as a wash to colour an area. By choosing a couple of contracting or complimentary colours, the environment can be pushed in a number of directions.

3. Colours and Textures

Monochromatic: A monochromatic colour scheme is limited to shades of the same colour. This is particularly useful if you want to keep the lighting simple or emphasize one colour.
Complementary: This particular colour scheme draws from two colours on the opposite side of the colour wheel. When you do this, the result is a high-contrast colour combo that’s bright and pops.
Cool or warm: You can invoke a certain mood and colour theme by combining colours of the same temperature. For example, combining red, orange and yellow can make the scene feel warm. The type of fixture will also have an effect. Whether it be halogen bulbs, the type of colour wheels within a fixture or LED.

4. Pyrotechnics

Haze: If it’s light enhancement you’re after, then maybe haze is what you need. Haze machines produce unobtrusive, homogeneous clouds suspended in the air intended primarily to make light beams visible or create a subtle diffusion.
Flame: While fireworks are mostly for outdoor use, flames are perfect for use on stage. Manufactured to stringent standards with accurate and consistent height, direction and intensity, they are designed to thrill and entertain and can make any event look spectacular.

Special Effects: Snow machines, confetti and streamers add drama and excitement to live performances bringing the effects to the crowd.
